A VALUED PUBLIC SERVANT.
PRESENTATION AT WELLINGTON. [by telegraph.press association.] WetxingtOV, Thursday. This afternoon Mr. H. C. Fife, who is retiring on a pension from the position of railways accountant, after a connection with the service extending over 36 years, was presented by Sir Joseph Ward, on behalf of the railway officers of the colony, with a gold watch and chain. ■ In eulogising Mr. Fife's long and honourable service in his responsible position, Sir Joseph Ward read an official minute he had made on _receiving Mr. Fife's resignation. This was ■as follows : —"I am very sorry indeed to feel it necessary, in response to Mr. Fife's unanswerable reasons, to have to accept his resignation. His services have been valuable to the colony, and he leaves a record that will always be a tribute to his zeal and fidelity to the public service of the colony. I trust the rest he is seeking may aid him so that the evening of his life may yet be a long one."
