WHARF AT GRAHAMS BEACH, A WITU.
A coERESroxDENT, over the signature of "Mariner," writes:— that the wharf at Graham's beach, Awitu, is an accomplished fact, as far as it goes, I deem it necessary to »„y a few words in praise of our Road Board arid also Mr. Massey, our member, hot;, of whom did all in their power to have the vote for its construction supplemented, so that the Board could carry out the work according to the original plan. In this they failed, not through any fault of their own, but because of the Government Treasury being closed. After two unsuccessful attempts to let the work by tender, the Board, acting on the sound advice of Mr. Massey, decided to go ahead with the work as far as the money in hand would allow, and trust to Parliament to have it supplemented in the near future. That they did, under the supervision of Mr. Ralph Hillett, who, by skilful workmanship, constructed it faithfully a distance of 169 ft, for the amount of the grant, namely, £100, material included. The present structure, though inadequate, is a sign of progress; but to make it suitable another £60 or £70 would require to be added. Without this it is comparatively useless for passengers at neap tides, and practically worthless for cargo at any time without a tramway. With an additional three spans of 20ft each, and a platform, the s.s. Wekii, or the up-to-date steamer which the M.S.N. Co. purpose buying, could come alongside at any tiihe on ordinary trips to and from Waiuku. As it is now, though not up to all requirements, it still stands as a .substantial proof of the Board's willingness to assist others less fortunate than themselves.
