LEAP IN THE DARK.
WOMAN'S DRAMATIC SUICIDE FROM
A STEAMER. As the Isle of Man Steamship Company's passenger steamer Douglas was ploughing her way to Liverpool in stormy darkness at three o'clock one morning, a lady was observed stealthily to ascend into the bulwarks. Scarcely had her slim figure become silhouetted against the sky when she threw out her arms and plunged into the waves. A cry was raised, and the captain brought the vessel round as soon as possible, cruising about foi some time to try to discover the lady. They were then some thirty miles out from Douglas, and till storm was at its height, but hundreds of excited passengers craned over the sides of the vessel with numerous lights, in what proved to be a vain effort to descry her. The steamer then continued her course. 'The woman was Miss Sarah Shimmin, a middle-aged Board School mistress in Douglas. She was availing herself of a holiday to visit London, where she had friends, and carried luggage with a view to an extended stay. No reason is known for her suicide. Of'late she had been studying hard, and appeared depressed.
