THE GOLDFIELDS.

MAY QUEEN EXTENDED CM. CO. The reef in No. 6 and No. 7 _ slopes in the May Queen Extended Gold Mining Company's mine showed strong colours and dabs of gold at. a .recent, breaking-down. The lode is about 12in wide. In the drive the reef measures 15in, and showed a few blotches of gold when broken down, the quartz also showing a good class of mineral. At the battery a crushing is in progress. MINERALS, LIMITED. The manager of the Minerals, Limited, mine telegraphs as follows: —"Paddock half-full of wash-dirt." THAMES BORING OPERATIONS. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Friday. The latest measurement of the borehole shows that a depth of 1010 ft has been.' reached. pinii— "" ' " Kg SHERIDAN MINE. [BY telegraph.— correspondent.] Thames, Friday. The improved prospects recently met with in the Sheridan mine have been maintained. A rise has now been commenced, with the view of proving the continuity of the run of gold upwards from the intermediate level, and so far the ore obtained has been of a highly payable character. The width of ore is over 2ffc at the present juncture. The backs available upon the reef from the intermediate level to the surface are about 160 ft. GOLDFIELDS IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE. [by telegraph.— correspondent.] Thames, Friday. A meeting of the Goldfields Improvement j Committee was held this evening, Mr. T. , A. Dunlop presiding. A letter was received from Mr. Geo. A. Jarvis, manager oi the Goldfields Diamond Drilling Company, requesting the committee to arrive , at a decision within the next few days as I to what depth they wished the drill to go in the borehole now in progress. If a depth of 1500 ft were required it would be necossarj tc substitute a more powerful drill in place of the drill now in operation. The matter was also referred to in the folI lowing report submitted by the Finance and Works Committee, which stated: — "No. 1 borehole is'down- to 1008 ft. The operations have proved one most important fact, viz., that the thickiiess of the limestone formation is 200 ft, and that a good belt or auriferous country lies below it. The drill entered this belt at 972 ft from the surface, and as far as "lively' country goes there is no reason why the reef when cut should not be payable. The committee have had under consideration the advisability of continuing the bote to a depth of 1500 ft, and they strongly recommend that this be done, provided the necessary financial adjustment can be made." It was decided that if the Kuranui-Caledonian Gold Mining Company subscribed a further sum of £50, the committee would continue the No. 1 borehole to a depth of 1500 ft, and to this proposal Mr. Stevenson, the attorney for the company mentioned, acceded. * The report was then adopted. The secretary (Mr. Bruce) submitted a statement oi" accounts showing the committee to have a credit balance of £-1507 16s.
