FISH HATCHERIES.
[BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington-, Friday. Notwithstanding a good deal of trouble from floods, the Wellington Acclimatisation Society has been successful in gathering a large supply of ova during the past season. In all, nearly a million and a-half eggs were laid down. Of these 713,000 were brown trout ova, and 712,000 rainbow trout ova. The manager of the hatchery had his nets swept away time after time by floods while securing the fish at spawning time ; but for this about treble the number of ova would have been put down. Ninety-two«pcr cent. of strong fry hatched nut from 20,000 brown trout ova sent from the Masterton hatchery to Dannevirke. This is a tribute to the skilful manner in which the ova are attended to at Masterton by Mr. Ayson, a son of the present inspector of fisheries.
