AN OVERDOSE OF LAUDANUM.

The coroner, Mr. Gresham, held an inquiry at the hospital yesterday touching the death of John B. Anderson, 70 years of age, an old settler from Canterbury, who died on Wednesday night, apparently from the results of an overdose of laudanum, under circumstances - already reported in our columns. Dr. Hooper, who wa3 called in v> sse the deceased at the Grosvenor Hotel, and who ordered his removal to the hospital after administering an [ antidote to opium, and an emetic, deposed that the cause of death was opium poisoning. | Other evidence was given showing that Anderson had been accustomed to the use of laudanum to produce sleep. Ho recently purchased a quantity of the drug to use- on his wrist, t r which had become swollen. Of a jovial disposition, he was, said Hugh Mcllhone, an old friend, in no way likely to take his own life- 1 ; He was not in any monetary difficulties.' He had stated his intention to take laudanum to ;' bring on sleep. The jury returned a verdict' showing that death was due to an overdose of laudanum, accidentally taken.
