EXPORTATION OF KAURI TIMBER.
VIEWS OF HON. E. MITCHELSON. Dubing the discussion on the Timber Export Act Amendment Bill in the Rouse of Representatives on Thursday, the opinion was expressed hy Sir Win. Russell that it might be a matter for consideration whether the colony should not altogether prevent the exportation of kauri timber. This view is strongly held by a number of those intimately acquainted with the kauri timber , industry, including the Hon. E. Mitchellson (chairman of the Mitcheison Timber* Company), who, in the course of an inter-• view* with a representative of the Herald some three months ago, stated that the time would soon arrive when the Government would have to take decisive action in the matter. In speaking to one of our; reporters yesterday, Mr. Mitcheison repeated his former statement, and said that. on reading the report of Thursday's discussion in the House he had telegraphed to the Premier as follows : — Betoro the expiration of the next four years necessity will compel the absolute prohibition of exporting kauri timber in any form." Mr. Mitcheisou considers that there is no reason why any. kauri, even that growing in isolated localities, should be exported, as to be accessible for export it must be within reach from the sea coast, from whence it can be conveyed to our own mills.
