EDUCATION BOARD MEMBERS EXPENSES.

A PROTEST FROM THE CHAIR. The Auckland Education -Board had befora; them yesterday the annual return of the tra- ; veiling' expenses and allowances of the members. The charges of the present members were as followL. J. Bagnall (Turua), £55 123 6d (previous year, £63 12s 6d); A R. Harris (East Taniaki), £10 17s; R, Hobbs (Ponsonby). nil; W. Lambs (Papatceto© and Morningsido), £19 4s 6d (previous year, £20 3s); S. Luke (Otahuhu), £11 10s (previous year, £10); P. M. Macfcay (Auckland), nil;; J. D. McKenaie (Whangarei), £73 4s (previous year, £74 6s); J. Muir (Remuera), £25 9s 6d "(previous year, £10}; J. G. Rutherford (Remuera), £16: total, £137 17s 6d, as against a total last year of £193 6s sd. The chairman {Mr. R. Hobbs) moved, "That the re?, turn? be submitted to the Finance Committee. for them to report on." He thought the charges required some revision; he was not; aware until these returns wore prepared that,; members living in the city or suburbs were: drawing allowances. It had never been done I. in his time, and he had never known it done'; before. There was another master in which a more definite arrangement was desirable. It did not appear to be in accordance with the intentions of the Audit Department that a member from, say, Wbangarei, should charge 10s for the day of his departure, when the steamer did not leave before evening, and a further 10s for the day of his return, when the steamer got back at six o'clock in the morning. He thought there should be i| rule that a' legal day consisted of 24 hours, and that the other pointsvhe had mentioned should be defined. It was quite right that | members should receive a fair allowance, but it was not expected that I, members should draw more than would ha considered fair and: equitable. The chairman's motion was agreed to without discussion.
