The marine fish hatchery and biological station at Portobello is in a fair way of being in full working order by the end of the year, the Marine Department having accepted 9 tender for the earthwork and tank construction. The site of the station is oi a rocky promontory and bay looking out on Port Chalmers, and well sheltered. .he Government has promised the sum of t'6oo towards the construction of the station, and the Otago Institute and the Otago Acclimatisation Society are contributing £250 each, while a promise of £250 per year for five years has also been made by the Government. Tt is p.oposed to commence work with observations on the development and rearing of one or more lands of native tood fches, and also to attempt the Introduction of foreign desir a hit kinds, correspondence with the Scotch Fishery Board and other authorities at Home "during the past three or four years having shown the feasibility of such a scheme.
