THE interclnb matches under the auspices of the Auckland Hockey Association were commenced on Saturday afternoon, the gaiaw played resulting as under:— SENIORS. Auckland and University mo* on tha former's ground, ami alter ii good game victory rested with the Auckland Warn by 6 goal* to nil. In. the first spell Auckland scored S goals, and the game was fairly even, but. i» the second bpell the winners had much ths be.it of the play, and put on another 4 goals, their forwards lasting out the game much wetter than the 'Varsity men, who tired considerably towards the finish. For Auckland Q. Hill (25, MacConuick 12), Speight (1), and Broadtoot (1> scored goals. All the forwards played well, and amongst the backs Harding (goal). Hill (full), ami broadfoot (centre-hall) showed up most prominently. For the 'Varsity team Finlayson (goal), Milter and (Jutland (forwards) were most conspicuous. Air. S. Buddock held the whittle, and gave every satisfaction- t» both teams. United A and United B played on the club's ground at lUsrnucra, the match resulting ;tn * win for the A team by 6 goals to one. The victory was regarded as a foregone conclusion, judging by the poor muster of the B team. From the opening bully play soon settled down in.the K's territory, where in less than live minutes from the start Barry scored tho first goal for the winners. The A'? forwards, who ware playing a great game, quickly took the ball past the opposing vanguard, beat the back;, and from a beautiful pass by Callcrider, • Morpeth sent the ball, between the uprights. : Well-judge:. 1 play and clean passing by th» A forwards quick!} increased the score, poalu being obtained by Barry (2.) and Morpeth (1). The first spell ended: A's, 5; B's. nil. The second spell was very uninteresting, and the B team, mainly through the efforts of Dinnison, Heid. lieskelh. Hose, mid.Why managed to keep the score down for a time. From :\ Forward rush a sharp tussle resulted in front of A's goal, in which Held scored the first, and only goal for the B team. Shortly before time Clarke took the ball down the held. and. easily beating tho opposing goal-keeper, registered, the sixth goal for the winners. For the victors. Court, Whyte. Brown.- Slump, and Thorites, in the back division, played with' great, combination, and well justified their selection. The forwards, especially Barry, Morpeth, and Callander, are a very compact and dashing set. their passing being very clean and well timed. For the losers, the most noticeable were Dinnieon, Reid. Hesketh, Rose, and 0. Whyte Mr. W. Hamlin had charge of the whistle, and gave every satisfaction. JUNIORS. Auckland A and University B played on the latter club's ground, Remuera. the match resulting in a win for Auckland by 5 goals to nil For the winners Kastgate and Lundon, were the pick of the forwards, whilst MeGuire and Whitley al-o ulayod well. For University Scott and Wymnn were prominent, but the team lacked combination. East gate (3) and Lundon (2) were the scorers for Auckland. The United v. Auckland match was played on IJnited's ground, and resulted in an. easy win for United by 4to nil. Coals were scored by Diunison. Corbett, Kenny, and Cleave. Both sides lacked combination, and United's shooting was very poor. For the winners Kenny, Osborne, and Dinnison played tbo best games, while Morrison and Culpan showed up for United. PRACTICE MATCHES. The Wapiti Hockey Club held a very successful practice match on Saturday, when the A forwards and B backs beat tho B forwards and A backs by 3 goals to 2. The game was a decided improvement on the previous Saturday's play, better combination being shown. The shooting on both sides was much below the standard, and great improvements can be made in this department. The backs, with ono or two exceptions, do not put enough wood into their strokes, and indulge too much in scraping. This matter must be remedied before it becomes habitual. There was a good muster of members of the To Huia Hockey Club on their ground. Mason's Prddock. Jervois Road, Ponsonby, on Saturday afternoon, when a well-contested practice match was played. At times there was some very brilliant play, which elicited applause from the onlookers. Tho girls appear to ho very enthusiastic about the game, and tho club should do well in the coming interelub matches. LACROSSE. CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES CONTINUED. In the other contest. City A had no difficulty in defeating their clubmates. City B's. Afternoon tea was supplied by the lady patrons of the association. Appended are the details of the afternoon's play:— SUBURBS V. EDEN AND EPSOM. ..., This game was played on No. 1 ground, Mr. P. White acting as referee. From the ope'hing lace off, by the agency of Stewart, play was carried to the attack. Sayers accepting sent to A,' Walton, whom Burke checked, and play went back to centre. Fairburn secured, and making an opening sent to Philson, who, cleverly dodging • past Nolan, landed an unmistakable goal. From centre Richardson dashed away to attack. Bartkstt received and sent to Fairburin, from whom it , went to Brassey. A long shot at goal Fairburn way stopped by Nolan, who threw away to the wing Bagnall received, and after travelling along ta© wing sent into Braithwaite. Hicks, who was playing with great vigour, defied first home's effort „o bustlo through, and sent play back to mid-field. Halt time. At the resumption of plav. Stewart one* more .nought to attack, sending to Sayerß, who passed along to Walton. Burke stopped iurtiier efforts on the part of his opponento by securing, and his long throw found Iho Suburbs forwards in possession Fairburn until well checked by Brown, was appearing dangerous, but the latter sent back to Stow. art, who. rushing straight through, had a shot, winch Hicks easily accounted for. Chungs ends. In the last quarter, the Mder: and EpRoan team made strenuous efforts to reach the Suburbs' score, the captain making a change in the position of some of his team. Braithwaite, who was playing first heme, changed places with Nolan at- point, and though the latter-succeeded in scoring almost Immediately on his arrival, the Suburbs' attack were equally busy, for, ere time was called, three more goals were scored. Philson being the operator, and at the conclusion of play the score stood: Suburbs, live goals; Eden and Epsom, our. goal. NOTES ON THE PLAY. As an exhibition of lacrosse, the game' hardly calls for any expression of commenda10}}- ..'ere was an apparent inability by bc.h sides to pick up, and consequently there was considerable ground scrummaging. The reason of this play is, the players assert, because of the extraordinary length of the grass. tor the ball, after reaching the turf, would , lodge in a tuft, and resist all hurried at-- | tempts to become dislodged. The attack of ! the Suburbs' side, including Bartiett, Fair- ; burn, and Philson, play most unselfishly, and. ! in concert, the lattei being especially clever i Brassey cm the wing, was of great assistance to his homes. Richardson wan in excel- : lent form. Burke was a. host in himself and gave the opposing attack no chances. Hick*" , goal-keeping was an improvement on ■huvthing he has yet shown. There was a lack or combination shown by the Eden forwards, who wero well fed by Stewart, Savers;, at third home, took tho ball well, and passed with gre.it judgment. Braithwaite, at first home, was sadly neglected by his clubmate Walton, who certainly held on to the ball too lons. TABLE TENNIS.
