THE GOLDFIELDS.

HARBOUR VIEW G.M. CO. In the Harbour View mine No. 1 rise is now up 50ft, and the reef is becoming more defined, showing a width of 18in. The country is also of a better class, and at last breaking down a little gold was seen. No. 6 stope in No. 3 block has been carried along 15ft, and No. 2 rise is up 31ft. The country is heavy, requiring careful timbering. The lode in these workings still maintains a promising appearance, and produces a little goia in places. The low level has been advanced a further 10ft, the reef being of increased size, at present showing a width of over 2ft of nice rubbly quartz and carrying dish prospect* good enough to lead to the expectation of specimens at any breaking down. • The manager telegraphed, yesterday stating that 181b of good picked stone had been won in No. 3 block, and that good gold was showing.

WHITE STAR G.M. CO. No. 2 level in the White Star Gold Mining Company's mine is now in 269 ft from the fiat-sheet. The country is much tighter, and the two leaders maintain their distance apart (about 3ft.)), but the horse of mullock has been interlaced with quartz stringers, and the manager thinks a change of some sort is about to take place, in which case there is every probability of the leaders making gold"

MARATOTO G.M. CO. In the Maratoto section of the Maratoto Gold Mining Company's mine, the rise on No. 5 level is now up 49ft, and the hard white quartz has been broken through and liberated more water. Samples taken for assay here gave a value of £2 7s 3d per ton from the sulphide ore, and one sample of picked ore from the top of the white quartz assayed very high. The winze in No. 4 level" being 'sunk to meet the rise is down 45ft. ' The total required to bring the two workings together is about 36ft. KAPOWAI G.M. CO. Tho wire and ground tramway at the Kapowai Ovid Mining Company's property, at Gumtown, is now completed. The sending of ore to the battery wa-s commenced on Monday last, and the mill was started on the following day. NEW ALBURNIA MINE. In connection with the purchase of the New Alburnia mine by Mr. H. H. Adams, we understand that a company with a capital of £10,000, in 100.000 shares of 2s each, is now being formed by Mr. Adams to work the property. The first work the new company will probably undertake will be the extension of the Moanataiari main adit tunnel level, a distance of about 2480 ft. which will bring the level directly underneath the Alburnia shaft, and will thus enable the company to systematically develop the property. ROYAL OAK G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Coromandel, Wednesday. In the Royal Oak mine during the last few months, a considerable reduction has been made in the number of men employed, partly owing to the prospects not being so encouraging, and partly owing to the absence of any heavy rains, which has prevented the battery from running, depending as it does entirely on water for its motive-power. Active development work is, however, being steadily carried on underground, and four rock-drills are kept continually at work turning over a considerable amount of ground, averaging close on 50 fathoms a month. The company has lately not been so fortunate in getting on to rich specimens, but by the systematic way their work is being carried on another rich patch might at any time be obtained. The company have now sufficient .power to work 10 head of heavy stampers as well as 10 head of light ones. As they have several hundreds of tons of low grade quartz on hand ready for crushing, it is hoped that from now onwards there will be plentv of i water to keep the battery at work without j any further stoppage.
