ANNEXATION RUMOURS.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.—

Suva, May 27. H.M.S. Pylades, with the Governor of Fiji, Sir 11. M. Jackson, on board, left to-day for Tonga. The object of His Excellency's: visit is unknown, but there is a rumour that it is in connection with the annexation of the Friendly Islands. The Chief Justice, Sir Charles Major, has been appointed Administrator during His Excellency's absence.

By the Samoan agreement of 1C99 Germany renounced in favour of Great Britain all her rights over the Tongan islands, and in the following year a British protectorate was proclaimed.
