BOROUGH COUNCILS.

PARNELL. The Mayor (Mr. J. Fitt) presided over an ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Council last evening, the other members present being Messrs. Petford, Wood, Bas- ! ley, Thomas, Beale, Fowler, Foster, Slator, and Briggs. Street Grievances: A complaint respecting the state of the stops leading from Selwyn Terrace was referred to the Streets Committee, and it was decided to prosecute persons taking horses down the steps. Other complaints were similarly referred to the Streets Committee. A letter respecting the channelling in Stratford-street was received. Insurance: The Mayor stated that he had heard from a reliable source that the high rate of insurance in the borough was to be abated. Financial: Payments aggregating £522 lis 5d were approved. The Tram Service: A circular was received from the Onehunga Borough Council inviting representatives to a conference, convened to take place in the Newmarket Council Chamber on June 3, to consider a timetable to bo submitted to the Tramways Company for approval. No action was taken beyond formally receiving the letter, the Darnell district having a special local service. It was considered unlikely that the Tramways Company would run cars to Onehunga through the borough. Street Lighting: On the proposition of the Mayor, the clcrk was instructed to ascertain whether a reduction could be obtained in the cost of the gas for street lamps, pro- i viding that half-a-dozen new lamps were | added to the present number. It was decided to represent to the City Council the desirability of erecting a lamp at tht railway bridge, in view of the danger arising from the tramway traffic, at night. A; request from residents in Hobson-street foi a lamp was deferred. NEWMARKET. The ordinary meeting of tin. Newmarket Borough Council was held in to Council Chamber last evening, Mr. John McGoll (Mayor) presiding. There were also present: Messrs. Bennett, Seccombe, Leek, McColl, iun., Holmes, and Edgerley. The Mayor was sworn in and made the usual statutory deCl Fir"e o Prcvention: The town clerk reported that in response to a request from the underwriters' Association a letter had been forwarded to the Auckland Electric Tramways Company drawing' attention to the tire recently caused at the premises of Mr. ieeu, chemist, through the fusion of electrio wires j connected with the company's service, and urging preventative measures. In reply the company's attorney (Mr. P. M. Hansen) stated that the necessary steps to prevent a recurrence would be taken immediately. Electric Tram Service: A circular letter ! was received from the Onehunga Borough Council intimating that it was intended to hold a conference in the Newmarket Hail on June 3 with a view to taking the opinion of the ratepayers of the Onehunga, One-tree Hill, Epsom, Newmarket, and' adjoining boroughs and road board districts on the question of making representations to the Auckland Electric Tramways Company with a view to having a time-table drawn up to meet the requirements of all concerned. Doparting from the subject matter of the circular, the Mayor and other members of the Council drew attention to the inconvenience caused by the trams being stopped at and started from points other than those fixed as the proper starting and stopping places for the cars. One member said he thought tho conductors were largely to blame in the matter, and evidently started from wrong place? with a view to making up time. It was decided to draw tho attention of the Tramways Company to the irregularities re- i ferred to and to send representatives to the conference being arranged by the Onehunga Council. Scarlatina Case: The district health officer (Dr. Makgill) reported a case of scarlatina in the borough and asked that the house in which the case was discovered should be thoroughly fumigated and the children prevented from attending school for a period of nine weeks. It was decided. to take stops to have the health officer's request given effect to. Water Consumption: The turncocks report for the past quarter gave the consumption of water as 4,838,000 gallons, an increase of upwards of a million gallons compared with the previous quarter. It was pointed out that the matter was one of great importance, and it was decided that the report be referred to the "Waterworks Committee, with power to act. ONEHUNGA. The ordinary ' meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was lickl last _ night, when there were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. D. A. Sutherland), Messrs. Colledge, Stoupe, Hill, Rifihworth, Rowe, Gray, Tole, McLeod, and Glanfield. An Kxc'uange: The -committee recommended that the request of the Mount lloskill Road Board for an exchange of the maintenance of certain roads be agreed to, viz., the Mount Roskill Road Board to take over the maintenance of the road leading from the Royal Oak to the borough boundary on Mount B.oskill Road, and the Council to be responsible for the upkeep of the road leading from Suttie's house to Pah Road, in front of the Pah gates, but that no change of formation shall be made by either party. The recommendation was adopted. Committees: The following committees were appointed for the ensuing year:—Finance and Eire Brigade, the whole Council, the Mayor to be chairman; Water Committee, Messrs. Stoupe, Gray, Hill, and the Mayor; Reserves and Cemetery, Messrs. Colledge. Hill, McLeod, and Rishworth; Library Committee, the Mayoi, Mesrs. bray, Kishworth, Tole, and McLeod. Accounts: Mr. Kowe moved, That a return be laid on the table showing nil amounts due to the borough on all reserves at the next meeting of the Council and bv whom the said amounts are owing." The motion was adopted. An Open Meeting: The Mayor announced [hat the meeting of the Council next Monday night might be open to the public, and he trusted as many residents would attend as possible to meet Mr. M. M. Kirk bride, the member for Manukau, to discuss various matter.-: of importance with that gentleman l;forc his departure for Wellington.
