A PRESENTATION. Having briefly reviewed the veterans and volunteers His Excellency presented to Lieutenant-Colonel Abbott (Fifth, Seventh, and Ninth New Zealand Contingents) and Captain Stevenson (Sixth Contingent), D.5.0., medals won by them in South Africa. Major Alexander read the Royal Warrant, signed by the King, conferring these honours upon the officers named, after which His Excellency pinned the insignia of the order upon the breasts of the distinguished recipients, and congratulated them in a few well-chosen words. The V.D. decoration was presented by the Governor to Major Pirie and Captain-Commandant Le Roy, and the South African war medal to Lieutenant Banks (Second and Sixth Contingents) and Lieutenant de Carteret (Sixth Contingent). THE FOUNDATION STONE LAID.

His Excellency the Governor, Lady Ranfurly, and the vice-regal party then ascended to the platform amidst cheers. Mr. W. K. Hutchinson handed His Excellency a handsome mallet of inlaid New Zealand -woods, and with a silver mounting, bearing the following inscription:—"Presented to His Excellency the Governor, Lord Ranfurly, G.C.M.G., on the occasion of his laying the foundation stone of the Veterans' Home, Epsom, Auckland,"New Zealand, on Empire Day, Mav 25, 1903."
