The Sydney Mail of May 20 contains an article on a tour through New Zealand by "W.K.8.," in which we find the following passage : — New Zealand is unquestionably destined to play an important part in the food problem of the future, and Australia. with an increasing population and the vicissitudes of wad seasons, which at times affect all semi-trorrical countries, will have to draw on New Zealand for her extra supplies of farm produce, for the production of which Maoriland is admirably suited, and where it is abundantly plentiful. She possesses rich lands, enjoys a copious rainfall all the year round, and every farm is within easy reach of a shi"»ing port or the railway, and the country, therefore, has all the facilities for carrying on a large and profitable business. I am not writing these notes with the view of drawing population to New Zealand shores, for the demand for the homv-hftuded sons of toil is easily met by those already in the country, except, perhaps, during 'the grass-seed and harvest 'seasons, which only last about three months, To those who fortunately possess some capital, and have experience and knowledge of business or of agricultural pursuits. I am satisfied New Zealand offers better inducement than South Africa and Canada, to which countries numbers of people are at present rushing, and where probably they may Jose their hardearned cash. The land policy of the Seddon Administration has been put to practical test by the close settlement scheme, whereby many hundreds of small farmers have been enabled to take up land on easy terms and work it, to the best advantage. The New Zealand dairy farmer is on velvet; with his small farm, as he can find a ready market for every pound of butter and cheese and gallon of milk he is in a position to supply."
