THE BUTTER TRADE.

STATEMENT BY MR. KINSELLA. [UY TELEGRAPH.—OWN* CORRKSrOXDKKT.] Wellington, Friday. Speaking to a Post representative as to how to effect an improvement in the quality of our butter, Mr. Kiusolla said he had advocated, and still strongly contended, that some better system of milk inspection should be adopted in the colony. The inspection of the milk is only carried out in connection with the city milk suppliers. "Very little has up to the present been done in connection with the supply of dairy factories. With regard to pasteurisation, Mr. Kiusella said if it was carried out on the lines ho had been recommending, it would prove very beneficial to the output of butter shipped to Groat Britain from this colony. Questioned as to how it happens that the Danes get moro for their buttei than do New Zealand producers, Mr. Kiusella mentioned the fact that last year wo received within from 2s to 4s of the prices obtained for the finest Danish butter for some of our best brands, while this year there was at times a difference of 10s per cwt. " Without having thoroughly investigated tho matter," said Mr. Kinsella, " itwould naturally appear to the colonial producer that the quality of our butter was at fault. It is, however, a well-known fact that at the beginning of the season, when large prices were prevailing for butter, we received very few complaints regarding tho quality. Later in the season the marketing of large stocks of stored goods, the greatly increased imports of Danish and Russian butters, and the consequent lowering in the price of the two latter, in my opinion caused a, serious slump. This induced those handling NewZealand butter to reduce tho price much below that of Danish, evidently fearing a block in the market when heavy stocks were arriving." In support of this opinion, Mr. Kinsella quoted from reports and letters by the Produce Commissioner in England.
