London, May 15. In the House ox Commons Mr. Caldwell, member for Mid-Lanark, cornplained of the slowness of the Australian mail steamers.
Mr. Austen Chamberlain, Post-master-General, said notice had been given to terminate the present contract, and he hoped to obtain a service of greater speed at a lower price. He intended to refer the matter to the Interdepartmental Committee.
Mr. Henniker Heaton said the P. and O. Company only feared French and German competition. Mr. Chamberlain said he would be delighted to receive offers from any company.
