New Zealand Herald Office. Thursday evening. Business on the Stock Exchange during the past week has not been marked by any special event. For good investment stock buyers are numerous and prices firm. In banks New Zealands are wanted at £3 12s 6d, and Nationals at £4 9s. In insurances New Zealands are a trifle weaker, with sellers at £4- 7s 6d and buyers at £1 6s. South British are also weaker, with sellers at £5 9s, and no declared buyers. Nationals again sold at £1 2s 6d, and more are wanted at £1 2s 6d. There are buyers of Standards at 19s. New Zealand Accidents are a shade weaker, with sellers at £2 2s. New Zealand and River Plate Land Mortgage, old issue, are wanted at ;81 ss, and new issue at £1 5s 6d. There are sellers of the latter at £1 6s 6d. Coals are a shade firmer. No alteration in the quotations for timber stock. D.S.C have been in demand, and sold at 12s:, 12s 3d, and 12s 4d, closing with buyers at 12s and sellers at 12s 6d. Wiseman's ordinary are wanted at £1, with sellers; at £1 Is. There are buyers of Itiverhead Paper Mills at £1 9s, and sellers at £1 10s. The market for mining stock is very quiet. There have been sales of Waihis at £5 9;; Waihi Extended at Is Id; Waihi Souths at 7id; Komata Reefs at lOd and lOjd; Crowns at lis; Tairua Broken Hills at 6s 6d and 6s 7d, cum div.; and 6s 3d, ex div. May Queen Extended sold at 4d; Hauraki Freeholds at lid, 10id, lid, and ; Four-in-Hands at 4d. Just prior to the close of the market favourable telegrams from the Bunker's Hill came to hand, causing a demand for the stock, and sales were made up to 5s 7d. Oats remain firm, the lateness of the harvest keeping the markets rather understocked for this time of the year. It will probably be well into the spring before the full stocks are offering which were expected. The price is now firm in the South at Is lOjd f.o.b. for B grade. Potatoes are just a shade easier in the South, but the demand keeps good. Wo understand that the earlier samples of maize expected next month will not be of any extent, as the bulk of the crop will not be ready till two months later.

Chaff is likely to be very scarce in a short time. A good many of the samples coming to hand are of rather indifferent quality, and' we have heard that some of the heaviest suppliers are now cleared right out. Cornsaeks are in very short supply, but ample stocks are arriving by the- Gracchus and the Fazilka, and sales have already been made to arrive. Milling wheat is firm in the South. The manufacturers have advanced the price of boiled lollies and pan goods. Severe cutting has for a lons time kept the quotations below paying prices. AUCKLAND STOCK EXCHANGE.
