BOROUGH COUNCILS.
NEWMARKET. The first meeting of the new Council for the Borough of Newmarket after the election, was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Mr. John McColl, the Mayor (reelected), in the chair. There were also present: Messrs. F. Bennett, E. Davis, Win. Edgerley, W. H. Hamblin, It. R. Holmes, C. Leek, James McColl, A. R. Seccombe, A. O. Shipherd. The members having made the usual statutory declaration, the Mayor welcomed them collectively, stating that he felt that one and all would do their utmost to advance the best interests of the borough. The members hat! done so in the past, and had loyally supported him through thick and thin. He felt that they would give him an equally loyal support in the future. On his motion, a hearty vote of thanks was then accorded Messrs. Kennedy, Cajston, and Angus, ex-members, for their services in the past. The Recent Elections: Before proceeding to the ordinary business, the town, clerk (Mr. Hogg) gave a rumour that had been circulated to the effect that he had refused to place certain ratepayers' names on the burgess roll in connection with, the recent Council elections a most emphatic denial. Infectious Diseases Hospital: The circular of the Devonport Borough Council, opposing the unnecessary expenditure in connection with the infectious diseases hospital, was read. The Mayor said that, generally speaking, he was in sympathy with the Devonport Borough Council in the matter, and a motion was unanimously carried endorsing the protest. Inspector of Nuisances: The turncock. Mr. James Howell, was appointed inspector of nuisances for ,the borough. On the motion of Mr. Davis, it was decided that the inspector should report on any existing nuisances in the borough not less frequently than once a month. Appointment of Committees: Committees were appointed as under:—Streets Committee: Messrs. Bennett (chairman)., Seccombe, Holmes, ' Hamblin, and Leek. Waterworks Committee:. Messrs. Shipherd (chairman), McColl, Seccombe, and Edgerley. Legal and Finance Committee: Messrs. Edgerley (chairman), Hamblin, Shipherd, Davis, and Holmes (also to act as a Hall Comnr'ttee). Sanitary Committee: Messrs. Holmes (chairman), Bennett, McOallj, Leek, and SeccomJbe. The Mayor will be a member of all committees, ex officio. Rates: In accordance with the Municipal Corporations Act, it was decided that a rate of Is 7d in the £ should be levied for the ensuing year on all- ratable property in the borough. , ONEHUNGA. The ordinary meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council wag held last night, when only business of a routine character was transacted, with the exception of a petition in regard to the electric tramway service, a report of which appears in another column.
