HIGH SEAS HORROR,
The Liverpool stipendiary magistrate has continued the hearing of the extraordinary charges of murder arising out of the tragic end of Captain Shaw and six of the crew of the British barque Veronica.
Certain of the crew of the ill-fated ship, it will be remembered, according to the testimony of the black cook, Moses Thomas, mutinied, Having committed, it is alleged, wholesale murders, tried to burn their vessel, then, taking to a boat, they landed on an island off the South American coast, whence they were rescued and brought to Liverpool, They attributed their misfortunes to the ordinary chances of the sea. But the black cook gave information which led to the present proceedings. The accused men are William Schmidt, Gustav Rau, and Otto Monson, three foreigners, who were able seamen on the ship. Ludwig Christian Heinrich Flohr, who was originally charged with complicity in the murder, but who, at the last hearing, turned King's evidence, and was discharged, was called, and detailed the fearful occurrences on board of the vessel. A further remand was granted.
