The Fry challenge trophy will bo played for to-day at the Cornwall Links. The match is one- of 18 holes, bogey handicap, and entries are to be made at the clubhouse The trophy has to be won throe times to bo won outright, but the winner of each match receives a trophy. When the last English mail left Harry Vardon, the famous golfer, was seriously ill, having ruptured a blood vessel. Lovers of golf in the Wimhorne district witnessed a splendid game between Alexander Herd (open champion) and James Braid (says a recent London Daily Express). The match was played on the Broadstone links. Herd's play was magnificent, and lie twice ,*?at Braid in two 18-hole matches. Herd won the first by fom holes up and threo to play. Jn the second match he won by five holes up and four to play.. The scores were:—Herd, 76; Braid, 81. There is some discussion in England at present on the qualification for the amateur championship, which has been in force since the eighties. It is as follows:—"An amateur golfer is a golfer who has nevei made, for sale golf clubs, balls, or any other article connected with the game; who lias nevor carried clubs for hire after attaining the aire of 15 years, and who has not carried clubs for hire at any rime within six years of the date an which the competition begins who has never received any consideration for playing in a match, or for giving lessons in the game; and who foi a period of five years prior to September 1, 1886, lias nover received a money prize in any open competition." It is pointed out by Golf Illustrated that the definition is negative and inequitable, and it would be bettor to make a five years' "quarantine" applicable to all, instead of perpetually barring a clubmaker and teacher who has left the ranks long before and prospered in other callings.
