j ANNIVERSARY REGATTA. j A MEETING of the committee of the Anniversary Regatta was held at the Waitemata Kotei yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance, and Mr. T. T. Masefield ] presided. Mr. W. 0. Somers (treasurer) ! presented the accounts of the last regatta, | which were passed, and will be duly audited jby Mr. Holmes. After paying the prize- ■ money and accounts in full, and making alI lowance for contingencies, there is a balance of about £50 in hand towards the next reI gatta. The Chairman expressed great plea- ' sure in having to. announce such a satisfactory ! result, considering that the committee had ] had such a short time in which to arrange ' matters and carry the regatta out. Mr. A. Alison suggested that the date of the next regatta should be altered to- about the middle of February. After 40 years' experience of the weather, he had come to the conclusion that if the date was altered there would be a better chance for more settled weather. What was wanted was to make the regatta a, colonial affair, so as to induce outside cornpetition, not only from otac parts of New Zealand, but from Australia. He felt sure that thero would be no trouble in raising the necessary funds so as to' proviae prizes of sufficient amount as do bring yachtsmen and oarsmen from all parts to compete at the regatta. The suggestion gave rise to a considerable amount of discussion, opinions being i about evenly divided on the matter of altering the date. It was finally decided to hold another meeting in a fortnight's time,, at which the balance-sheet of last regatta would bo brought up, and then call another meeting a week later for the appointing of a committee to carry out the regatta of 1904-. A cordial vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and treasurer for their past services, Messrs. Masefield and Somers in reply expressing the pleasure which it had given them in the past to help the Anniversary Regatta*, and trusting that a strong and energetic com-' niittee would be formed so as to make the regatta of 1904 one worthy of Auckland; as the chief maritime city of New Zealand..
