UNIVERSITY CONTESTS. , ( , The second annual athletic carnival under, the auspices of the University of New Zealand opens at Auckland on Saturday next. Last year's carnival was held at Christchurch, and was attended with much success, and the forthcoming fixture promises to have equally encouraging results. An attractive programme, which will extend over three days, will engage the attention of representatives from the principal educational centres in the colony. The Southern representatives will arrive on Friday morning. On Saturday next tenuis championship matches between representatives from Victoria College (Wellington), Canterbury Colleger Otago University, and the Auckland University College will take place, and in the evening a debating contest for the championship shield will be held in St. Benedict's Hall. Pro- ■ fessor Thomas will preside, and the judges will be Messrs. J. W. Joynt (registrar New Zealand University), W. J. Morrell, M.A., and the Rev. J. H. Simmonds, M.A. The subject will be " Whether a strong military training on Home defence should be in force throughout the Empire." Or Easter Monday the athletic tournament will take place on the Domain. Cricket Ground, when the University championship events will be decided. In the 440 yds flat, open to all amateurs, Webster, oi Taranaki, will be a competitor, and will endeavour to break the New Zealand record for that distance. Great accounts come from Canterbury as to the chances of the Christchurch team. Their principal sprinter, Moyes, is certainly one of the fastest men in New Zealand. The Victoria College team includes A. S. Henderson, a strong competitor at the New Zealand and Australasian championships of 1901. In the Auckland team are Hay, Marsden, Rosewarne, and Gatland, all of whom have run in local amateur events, and Stuckev. the Suburbs' five-eighths of last year, who 'is a sprinter of no mean ability. O'lCane and Buck, of Otago University, should make a bold bid for the 120 yds hurdles and long jump respectively.
