Mr. T. Hutchison, S.M., presided at the Police Court yesterday. , Drunkenness : Two first offenders were convicted and discharged on payment of cabIjiro. Street-fighting: John Hastings and Francis ..IcKenna were each fined 10s, and costs 2s 6d. or in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for fighting on tin; footpath in Queen-street, in ,-ront of the Waitemata Hotel. Remanded: James, alias John, Downey was charged with assaulting a man-o'-war sailor named Vfidiara Cowen, so as to cause him actual bodily harm. Sub-Inspector Black said Cowen was in the hospital, and asked for a week's remand. Accused said the sailor caught him by the throat, and that he acted in self-defence. The remand was granted as applied for, and bail allowed in one surety of £25. Henry Pearse, 64 years of age, was charged with vagrancy at Panieil. A remand for a week was granted. By-laws: Charges preferred against Chas. and Alex. Barron, of allowing their ■horses to Wander in Robert-street. Ellerslio, were dismissed. For leaving a hansom cab unattended on No. 3 jetty Michael Leonard was fined ss. Edward Wilson was penalised for a like amount for failing to remain by his cart horse on No. 3 jetty, and he was convicted and discharged on a charge of allowing his cart to proceed along the same jetty at greater than a walking pace. Joseph Moylo was fined ss, and cost's '7s. for leaving a cab unattended in Albert-street. Theft: Annie Elizabeth Slattery pleaded .guilty to the theft of a quantity of bedclothing and miscellaneous articles, valued at 30s, from the boardinghouse of Eliza Jane Starr. Accused asked to be dealt with leniently, and said most of the articles had been returned, and she would tov for the rest. Accused was remanded till" Wednesday next for the report of the probation officer. Assault: Thomas Anderson nleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Lewi's* Robert Eady. Mr. Bamford, for the prosecution, said both the parties were attending an auction sale in Syrnonds-street. and accused questioned Eaciys right to bid at the sale, as he had rot a second-hand dealer's license. Eady told him to mind his own business, when accused struck him a blow which necessitated medical treatment. His Worship imnosed a fine of £3. and costs £1 103, or in "default seven days hard labour. Committed for Trial: Jessie Macartney was charged with stealing from the person of Robert McMasters the sum of £4-5. ChiefDetective Grace prosecuted. Robert McMasters, commission agent, residing at Richmond Road, said he met accused in Queen-street on Wednesday night. He had £43 in his pocket. He missed his monev, and accused the girl of taking it. She denied this, and asked to be taken to the police station, in order that she might clear herself. Witness had his money all right two minutes before he missed it. On the way to the station they met Detective Kennedy, and after some conversation the girl called witness aside and said, '■'If I give you back your money, there will be no further trouble'"' Witness assented, and the girl said it was on the ground behind where the detective wa3 standing. It was found on the footpath, and the girl was arrested. In i answer to His-Worship 'accused said McMasters asked her if she would like the money, and gave it to her. He then wanted it back, and she refused, jokingly, and offered to go to the station. When they met the detective she saw that she had gone too far, and dropped the money on the path, and to! the prosecutor of it. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed in £20.
