TROOPERS' MEMORIALS.
The memorial to" fallen troopers which is to stand in the Albert Park is now on view in Messrs. Parkinson and Co. yard, Vic-toria-street. It is a beautiful piece of work, and will be a distinct adornment to Albert Park. The main feature is a statue of a colonial trooper in marble, standing on a marble drinking fountain. The memorial has been presented to the city by the members of the battery which accompanied the Fifth Contingent to .South Africa, in memory of their comrades who lost their lives in South Africa. At a meeting of the Troopers' Memorial Committee held at Thames on Sept. 12. fur- I ther designs were submitted for consideration. After careful examination it was decided to throw out- all designs for statues costing more than £115. and the remaining designs were, then, carefully pone into, but as there are several reports ret to come from various collectors the matter of making the final selection was adjourned until these were received. At meeting of Timarli 'troopers' Memorial Committee <m Sept. 9, it was reported that the funds in sight were about £335. It was decided to ask assistance from the local Patriotic and More Men Funds Committees, if necessary, and to invite competitive designs for a memorial not exceeding £500 in cost. A meeting of subscribers is to be called, to select a site. Marton Borough Council decided to erect, at a coat of £150, a permanent memorial in the park to commemorate peace, the Coronation, and the death of Trooper Hyde, who was the only Rangitikei trooper killed in the war. Melbourne bluestone will be used. The subscribers to the memorial to the late Mr. Stanley Pees Scott have selected the design of a marble urinking-fountain, with bluestone foundations, submitted by Mr. Frank Harris. The memorial will, be erected near Shelly Beach.
