ARRIVAL OF THE WAKANUI.

NO SICKNESS ONBOARD. LIST OF THE NEW ZEALAND ' TROOPERS. The New -Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Wakanui arrived from:: London, Capetown and Hobart at four o'clock yesterday afternoon and anchored in the powder ground. The steamer; .which arrived at Ho-

Bart from Capetown on Wednesday last, was not allowed to land any of. her passengers for Australia at that port owing to there having been two cases of smallpox on board during the voyage, and consequently the passengers were brought on to Auckland by the steamer. •.

VShortly after the Wakanui's arrival yesterday afternoon Dr. MakgilL district health officer, and Dr. Sharman, port health officer, proceeded down to the steamer in the steam launch Presto. After the usual questions as to the health of those on board and the reply being given that all were well, and that there had been no further cases of smallpox.other than the two previously reported, the health officers boarded the tmer, and after the usual inspection, returned to town, orders being given that strict quarantine should be preserved until matters had been reported to the authorities at Wellington. From what can be gathered it appears that when the steamer was about off Teneriffe it was found that two of the crew were suffering from smallpox. Captain Worster, the commander of tho steamer, had the two men at once isolated from the rest of the crew, and every precaution taken to prevent the disease spreading. By the time the steamer reached Capetown the men were in a convalescent state, and before Hobart was reached on Wiflßesday last they were at work again, being quite recovered, and there had been no further outbreak. The authorities at Hobart, however, refused _ to allow any passengers to be landed at that port, and Captain Worster, of _ necessity, had to continue his voyage, bringing on the

Australian • passengers. Dr. Makgill has communicated with the authorities at Wellington on the matter, and it is expected that the Wakanui will, after the customary fumigation process, he permitted to berth at the Queen-street Wharf and discharge her cargo. A reply is expected to reach Auckland this morning as to the course to be pursued, and in the meantime no communication is permitted with tho steamer from the shore.
