THE GOVERNORS VISIT TO INGLEWOOD.
On Monday last [ His Excellency', the Governor paid an official visii to Inglewood, When he ■ laid; the foundation 'of a Presbyterian Church. His Excellency >vas received as . the station by the Rev. Mr. Osborne, by whom the Rev. Mr. Hutson, the Rev;' Mr. Spiers, and . Mr. Kiohblls. (chairman), were presented to him. ilr/Sytnes, M.H.R., was also present,';:'Mr."-'-.Trimble,. chairman of the Moa : Road ] Board, 1 and other i representative men. The Inglewood HiSes, under Captain Leech and Lieutenant Thomson, were en the platform, and formed a guard of honour, while the Inglewood division.of the rlawera Mounted Rifles,'", under Lieutenant Percival, . were drawn lip, outside J .the ; station, ; and - formed an escort.; for His. Excel lenoy's carriage.: ! ; His Excellency'was ; driven direct to the site of the church building, on reaching which he at once took up a position near the stone, being supported, on all sides by the various clergy and the Presbytery "committee and officers. • The Rev. Mr. Osborne opened I the proceedings with a short ? address, pointing out that it was an honour' for anyone, :no matter how,-: exalted, ; ; to lay the foundation-stone of a church, ' and \ the appropriateness in the present instance in Earl Banfurly : performing tho ceremony, e the] church being »■ named after His* Excel*, lency's family name, "Knox." -'-: His Excellency i, then expressed ~ the pleasure it gave him to take part in the < ceremony, and ' referred pleasantly.to the remarks of the Moderator »as to * unity of working, and also 'referred to the necessity while seeking to erect edifices in towns, not to forget the spiritual requirements of those pioneers of settlement -\ who were totally, unable: to get into towns to worship, and who seldom, if ever, saw a clergyman amongst them. . His Excellency was then driven back to his railway car for I * short rest, ; af tec : which he ; was ; escorted to the: Foresters' Hall, where the members of the church had prepared an excellent lunch. - ■ ' The Rev. Nicholls, chairman of the : Town Board, occupying the chair. Mr. Nicholls' proposed : the toa3t of "His Excellency- the Governor." * .The toast was ■ drunk with musical honours. His Excellence who was greeted with prolonged applause.' spoke of th* project he was now interested in of establishing a Veterans' Home. He said the New Zealanders who had come; back had' passed '-through all their works With signal credit.
