THE OLD FIRE BRIGADE.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,l was very pleased to read in your ' last Saturday's Supplement an echo from Mr. Hawes, of Northcoto, of my letter to you in reference to the old volunteer fire brigade. He says I made a mistake in saying we found our own clothing in the shape of a baize shirt. Well, it may have been as he says, for after a lapse of over 40 years it does not do to be over sure of a matter so trivial. I can only say that I have no recollection of ever being served out with what he describes. I know our uniform, or rigout, was a blue serge shirt, or jumper, and belt. With respect to the number of places burned on the occasion he* refers to— namely, the High-street firethere I cannot agree with him. If he had said 50 or 60 (not 200) I am sure he would have been nearer the- mark. I, think I am correct in saying the said fire took place in 1856 or 1857. I trust that if we old firemen of ye olden times are invited to tho ceremony— which I am informed will take place at the opening of the new station— shall still bo able to make a fair muster roll. Since first writing to you on this" matter several of tho "old-timers" have told me they quite agree with me.— am, etc, L. L. Levy.
