THE KHYBER PASS TRAMLINES.

NARROWING OF FOOTPATHS ABANDONED. The proposal to provide more room for vehicular traffic on Khybor Pass by reducing thy width of the footpath was brought up at three different stages of the meeting of the City Council last night. First of all Mr. J. W. Hewson handed in the resolutions passed by the meeting of Khybor Pass residents in the Grafton school on Tuesday evening. The letter was referred to the Streets Committee.

At ,a later stage Mr. Hewson wanted to get the Legal Committee to inquire as to how it came about .that a double line of rails bad been laid down in Khyber Pass. The Order-iu-Council did not provide for a double line in Khyber Pass, the double line had never been agreed to by the Council, nor was it in tho deed of delegation. It was on the plans, but the plans could not override the Order-in-Council. If Khyber Pass was dangerous it was for the Council to lessen the danger, and they could not lessen it by narrowing the footpath; they must lessen it by ordering the removal of one of the lines, at least, till the double line was sanctioned by the Council. The Mayor said it was a pity Mr. Hewson did not interfere before the line was laid. Mr. Hewson said all he wanted was that the Council should allow him to move that the Legal Committee report on the mattor. ■■''"'
