PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.
[BT TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Thursday. THE VAILE RAILWAY SYSTEM. NEARLY the whole of the afternoon sitting was taken up by the discussion on the Vaile system, much to the chagrin of those members who were anxious to bring on their • local Bills. It was rather unfortunate that i the question was raised to-day, which is : always sacred to the necessities of local J Bills, because several lion, members were I visibly annoyed at the large encroachments iit made upon their time. Moreover, some j of the friends of the system had determined ! that a vote should be taken on the question j before the session closed. Even if the I House had expressed its wish that a trial I should be given the system, it is doubtful j whether the position would have been much ! improved as far as Mr. Vaile is concerned, but at the same time there is no doubt that the voting would have been closer if a more suitable day had been picked for discussing the matter. JOTTINGS. Mr. Palmer wants to know when the Minister for Public Works will be able to replace the men upon the Karangahake railway tunnel again, and relieve the pressure in that district caused from want of employment. The Minister for Public Works is to be asked by Mr. Lang to give instructions for the necessaries of life to be carried en the public works engine free of charge to men employed by the Government on the North Island Main Trunk railway. Mr. Pirani intends to move for a return giving copies -of all telegrams and cables forwarded by Mr. Seddon to the colony which were paid for, or are to be paid for,out of the public funds, with the exception of those which were confidential. Mr. Palmer will ask the Acting-Premier if he will instruct Mr. Donne, Tourist Superintendent, to visit Coromandel and report upon the picturesque scenery, islands, and waterfalls in and near that town, in order that tourists may have full information about the great attractiveness of Coromandel as a tourist resort. i
