EL AM SCHOOL OF ART.
PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. At the Elam School of Art, Municipal Buildings, on the 12th of June, a number of the students and their friends were present to witness the presentation by the Mayor of Auckland (Mr. Alfred Kidd) of the certificates won by the students at the last South Kensington science and art examination. Seventy-three students competed, and 60 were successful in gaining certificates. The school was founded by bequest of Dr. J. E. Elam, of Tamaki, in 1889, and started in 1890 in rooms given by the Auckland City Council. The school met four days a week, with an average attendance of about eight at a class. Now there arc 15 classes per week, with an average attendance of about 35.
His Worship after a brief speech proceeded to distribute the certificates, which were gained by the following .students: — Freehand Drawing of Ornaments: Firstclass— Day. Amelia F. Simmonds. Second-class—lda Watts, Vera Jacobsen, Marie Stephenson-Wrack, Dulcie Wickham, Frances Brassey, Ruby Porch, Winifred Beere, Ethel Pinson, Mattie Walker, Bertha Tisdall, Winifred Otway. Model Drawing: First-class Amelia F. Simmonds, Rose Metcalfe, Bertha Tisdall. Second-class— Ruby Porch. Marie Stepheh-son-Wrack, Florence Higgins, Eleanor Kendon, E. L. Ross, Ethel Pinson, Frances BraSsey. Dulcie Wickham, Lillian Green, Ivy C. Day, Ida, Watts, Olive Good, Winifred Otway. 'Drawing in Light and Shade; First-class— Dora Barkley, Bertha. Tisdall. Second-class —Winifred Otway, Ruby Porch, Florence Higgins, Marie' ■-."dienson-Wrack, Rose Metcalfe, Eleanor Kendon.
