CHURCHES AND RATES.
TO THE- EDITOR. Sir,— you allow me space through your valuable paper to draw the attention of tho ratepayers and our city councillors to the practiee which is being indulged in by a section of the community using certain churches for political and other meetings, and getting cheap advertisements, as was done by Mr. George Fowlds on Sunday week last ? This is not the first occasion that such meetings have taken place, and those buildings used for other than Divine worship. If the churches are used for such purposes then they should pay rates and taxes as other buildings and property. Why should the various halls about the city be compelled to pay rates and those churches be - exempt ? The halls are used for Divine worship just the same as those churches. In justice to other ratepayers it is the duty of our city councillors to take the matter up and see that those buildings are rated as other halls.— am, etc., James McLeod. Karangahape Ro^.
