By Telegraph— Association.—
(Received June 23, 10.40 p.m.)
London, June 23. Lord Milner has informed the South African Chamber of Mines' that the new mining tax willyield half-a-million, which, with} other revenue from existing sources,* will balance local expenditure. He believed additional taxes were not intended and he hoped arrangements in connection with the dynamite duty would save the industry £300,000. There was the prospect of an early reduction in the Customs duties. He added that the people would be consulted on all future measures.
Mr. Fiddes, Lord Milner's secretary, remains in England to advise Mr. Chamberlain on South African affairs.
