EMIGRATION TO SOUTH AFRICA.
[IIY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington', Sunday. There is considerable demand for telegraphists for South Africa, and the prospects offering in that part of the world just now have induced a number of New Zealand operators to accept appointments there. I understand that the New Zealand Telegraph Department has already lost 12 telegraphists from this cause. The Minister for Lands has received about 60 applications in response to the advertisement which he inserted in New Zealand papers at the request of the Imperial Government, notifying that experienced surveyors were required for the African Gold Coast. Three certificates for permits for South Africa have been granted by the Stipendiary Magistrate during the last few days to persons wishing to emigrate to South Africa, who have produced to him the necessary proof that they possess £100 each. Their next step will be to apply to the Colonial Secretary for the permits. EXODUS FROM AUSTRALIA. Since the arrival of the news of peace, the Commonwealth Department for External Affairs has been overwhelmed with applications for permits for emigration to South Africa, the applications being at the rate of about 50 a day. The question arose some little time back whether the restrictions on emigration to South Africa would now be relaxed. The matter was tested on a point in connection with horse attendants, and a cable message was despatched from Melbourne to Mi-. Chamberlain. The Secretary for the Colonies, however, replied that he saw no reason for advising any alteration in the restriction. Mr. Stewart, chief clerk of the External Affairs Department, says that, speaking from private advices, he is convinced that there will be no relaxation on speculative emigration for some time to come. The Imperial authorities will be anxious to dam back the tide of emigration until the Boers and the loyalist Afrikanders are back again on their farms and at their ordinary avocations.
