ATHLETIC NOTES.

BOWLING. PONSONBY CLUB. The annual meeting of the 'Pousonby Bowling Club was held at the green on Friday evening, there being a large attendance of members. The committee's report referred to the increasing popularity of bowling, an evidenced by the election of 36 new members during the year, as well as by the formation of other clubs. The games played during the year were reviewed, the following winners being mentioned : —Mr. .1. Veale, championship singles; Messrs. M. Casey, S. C. Lee, W. Swale*, and .1. Veale, club fours; Messrs. J. Pascoe and .1. Kirker, club pairs: .Mr. C. B. Osmond, first-year player's trophy; Messrs. Lee and Kirker, pairs match. The erection of the new clubhouse was referred to as the principal event of the season. The statement of accounts for the year showed a credit balance of nearly £60. The committee thanked the members and the ladies foi the support received during the year. The following oflicers were elected for the ensuing! :—President, Mr. .1. Kirker; vicepresident-, Messrs. A. Littlei and .T. C. Dickenson: hon. secretary. Mi. A. Bartlett: treasurer, Mr. T. Ussher; committee, Messrs. D. Stewart, J. Newall, J. W..Rees, and W. Jones. At a meeting of the committee on Saturday evening it was decided to lay out a croquet lav. form new paths and flower-beds, and to open the clubroom to members every Friday evening, when a ping-pong table, table bowls, and other amusements will be provided. The club's green is being re-turfed with turf kindly presented by Mr. Kirker, and it is expected to be in excellent order next ".eason. NEWMARKET CLUB. The conditions yesterday were none too favourable for the attempts by V\ . McManus, the Australian professional athlete, to lower existing running records, the track at Carisbrook being heavy. The Australian ran well, but failed in his attempts. He covered 300 yds (paced) in 31 l-ss. (world's record 305.) and 440 yds in 50 3-ss. (world's record 475.). In the hop, step, and jump MoM&nus covered 44ft, beating the previous New Zealand record by a foot.
