LICENSING COMMITTEES

THAMES. [BY telegraph.—own correspondent.] ; . , Thames, Friday. The annual meeting of the Thames Licensing Committee was held in the courthouse at noon to-day, there being present: Mr. R. S. Bush. S.M. (in the chair). Captain Swindley, and Messrs. J. "West, ..V. H. Lucas, George Horn, and William Scott. Sergeant Clark appeared for the police, and Mr. E. W. Porritt (of Miller and Porritt) and Mr. E. Olendon represented the several applicants. Transfers of licenses were granted as follows Ernest C. Kivell to James S. Shanks . for the Governor Bowen Hotel. Thames; Jeremiah D. O'Connor to John Lynch, for tie Golconda Hotel, Cororaandel. The following new licenses for old houses were granted:—Benjamin C. Roberts, Coromandei Hotel, Coromandei; Charles F. Malloy. Tramway Hotel, Coromandei; Edward T. Bain, Commercial Hotel, Opitonui; James S. Shanks. Governor Bowen . Hotel, Thames; Samuel Howard, Royal Hotel, Thames; John Lynch, Golconda Hotel, Coromandel. In connection with the application of Joseph Mullins for a renewal of the license for the Ballarat Hotel, Coromandel, Mr. Clendon, who appeared in support of the same, stated that since the application had "been made Mr. Mullins had died, and he yfMr. Clendon) asked that the license be. renewed in the name of Catherine Muliins, the widow of deceased. The renewal was granted to Mrs. Mullins, subject to a certificate of administration being produced within the ■next seven days. . All applications for renewal of licenses were granted throughout the district with one exception, subject in a few instances to certain improvements being effected in the way of painting and papering. The exception was in connection with the application of Henry •Johnston for the renewal of the license of the Kapanga Hotel, Coromandel. In this instance the police report was unfavourable. The application for the renewal of the license '-, was adjourned for three months for the purpose of seeing whether there would be an improvement in the conduct of the house in the meantime, and also for allowing t : me ■ whereby arrangements could be made for in- '! < «creasing the size of the backyard, of the hotel, which at present is considered very insufficient.
