Washington, May 25. The death is announced of Lord Pauncefote, British Ambassador at Washington.
Lord Pauucefote, who was created a peer in 1899, was born in 1828. Ho studied for the Bar, and in 1865 was appointed Attor-ney-General of Hongkong, and four years later Acting-Chief Justice, and knighted for his services to the colony. Alter filling for a short time the office of Chief Justice of the Leeward Islands, ho returned to England, and in 1674- was appointed Legal Assistant Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, and in 1874- Assistant (Legal) UnderSecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, in 1882 succeeding Lord Tenterden as Permanent Under-Secretary- for Foreign Affairs. Six years later he was appointed British Minister in "Washington, and in 1893 raised to the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States. His name has been recently prominently before the public in connection with the action of the representatives of foreign Powers at Washington during the Spanish-American war. Last month he had a serious attack of rheumatic- gout, and his friends urged him to relinquish his post and return to England. In view of the recent controversy regarding the attitude of Great Britain during the war with Spain, the Ambassador felt that if he was to leave his withdrawal, would ho attributed to dissatisfaction on the part of his Government with his conduct in 1898. He- therefore decided to remain in Washington, but it was his intention to return to England in a few months. ."'
