THE VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS.
\ ASCENT OF MOUNT PELEE. A. TERRIFYING ASPECT. WHIRLWINDS OF SMOKE AND GAS. EXODUS FROM MARTINIQUE. iiy Telegraph.—Press Association.— (Received May 25, 5.11 p.m.) London, May 21. Six thousand have quitted Martinique and thousands have gone to the extreme south of the island. New York, May 23. M. Chancele, an official, ascended Mount Pelee to a height of 1233 metres on Friday and found a crater 300 metres in diameter. The peak of Morne la Croix is undermined and the whole aspect is terrifying. Although Fort de France is not threatened now the panic continues. A number of people became insane and threw themselves into the sea, dreading fresh cataclysms. The inhabitants of Grand Riviere are still isolated and it is impossible to send aid to them. Mount Pelee is vomiting yellow rushing whirlwinds of smoke and gas. The pulverisation of the basalt towers of the cathedral of St. Pierre and the overthrowing of the bouses indicate that a blast of blazing gas of incalculable force accompanied the eruptions. ■
