MR, CARROLL AND TEE WAIKATOS.
' BOUNDARY QUESTION ' SETTLED. 1 As a result of the conference between the ; Hon. James Carroll (Native Minister) and
King Mahuta, and several or the native
.:; chiefs, a satisfactory settlement of the boundaries of the Waikato and Maniapoto Land | Councils has been arrived at. There was I ; Borne slight deviation from the line originally : suggested, but the result has been ratified if by both sides, and it should not be long before the councils get to work. Mr. Car;i roll has had several interviews with Mahuta, and has, been endeavouring to get him i to take up a more definite position in regard ;./; to native matters than he has hitherto done. 'It was pointed out to the "king" that if Is would direct his influence in:the right direction he could do a great deal of good • for the native people. It is understood that the Government are desirous that Mahuta should occupy a seat in the Legislative Council, but so far he has not declared his feeling in the matter. This morning Mr. Carroll leaves for Te Kuiti on business con- ': nected with the Maori Land Councils.
