BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual meeting of the Auckland Education Board, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs. L. J. Bagnall (chairman), W. Lambe, •J. D. McKenzie, R. Hobbs, J. Rutherford, S. Luke, J. Blades, and J. Muir. Statistics: The school statistics for the • quarter ended March 31 showed that the number of schools under the Board, including 62 half-time schools, was 397, being an increase of two since last quarter; 343 male teachers, being a decrease of one; 452 female teachers, being a decrease of 11; 63 sewing teachers, being a decrease of 10; 29,028 pupils on the roll, being an increase of 641; and an average attendance of 24,996, being an increase of 595. Travelling Expenses: On the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was agreed that the claims received from relieving teachers for expenses of travelling to and from schools remote from their homes should bo referred to the Education Department for consideration. Resignations: The Chairman reported that resignations had been received from Mr. T. H. Gibbard (Orovillc) and Miss M. J. Dickson (Taupo). Sickness in Schools: The Finance Committee recommended, and it was agreed, that the Golden Cross and Kamo schools should bo temporarily closed, as recommended by the school committees, in consequence of the prevalence of an epidemic in those districts. Teachers' Movements: The report of the Teachers' Selection Committee was as follows:—Ycur committee recommend that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board:—Miss E. Bongard, to be mistress, Board:—Miss E. Bongs.rd, to be mistress. Wade school; Miss P. H. Fawcett, to be mistro..-.. Oegarue school; Miss E. R. S'.hisohfca, pupil-teacher, from Nelson-street .to Te Ai'oha school; Mis., F. Morrison, pupilteacher, from liobsonville to Nolson-street school; Miss S. M. Allely, pupil-teacher, from Tauranga to Grafton school; Miss Jessie L. Lowe, pupil-teacher, to Hobsonville school; Miss Janet G. Macindoe, pupilteacher, to Devonport school. Your committee received a letter from the Ellerslie School Committee, recommending Mr. Francis H. Brown, first assistant of Newton East school, for the position of headmaster. Your committee recommend that the school committee should be again invited to select a headmaster from the 10 candidates whose names and qualifications have been already submitted by resolution of the Board for consideration. Your committee have examined the 14 applications received in answer to advertisement for the position of mistress in charge of the infant department of the Beresford-street school, and recommend that the names and qualifications of the following candidates should be submitted to the City Schools Committee for their consideration: — Misses H. J. Priestley, M. S. Newman, E. R. Wilson, and L. B. Maxwell. Your committee received a letter from the Newton Schools Committee, asking for the names of three other teachers besides Miss M. Nicholson, with a view to the selection of third lady assistant for Hie Newton East school. Your committee recommend the name? and qualifications of the following teachers should be submitted to the school committee for their consideration:—Misses E. Simpson, K. S. M. Shroff. M. W. Cleghorn, and J. Morrison. Your committee recommend that school committees should be consulted in regard to proposed appointments, as follows:— Waitetuna, Miss L. A. J. Ainswortb : Taupo. Miss M. R. Archibald; Papakura (mistress). Miss C. E. Gillespie; Helensville (mistress), Misses M. C. Kelly and A. B. Hodgson. Your committee recommend that the request, of the Pakiri School Committee for the appointment of a male teacher should be granted, and that a substitute teacher should be sent to take temporary charge pending such appointment. Your committee report that the proposed exchange of headteachers of the Kaeo and Ramarama schools is not approved by the school committees of those districts. Your committee recommend that- action should be taken to give effect to the request of the mistress of the Hamilton West school for removal to another position, and that the request of the school committee for the substitution of a second assistant for the two pupil-teachers now employed! at. the school should stand over in the meanwhile. Your committee received a letter from the Warkworth School Committee, setting forth lie need for the appointment of an additional teacher to the staff of that school, in view of the largely increased attendance, and recommend that the same be submitted to the Minister for Education for consideration by him. Your committee received communications from the Kauaeranga Schools Committee objecting to the changes of pupilteachers at the Baillie-street and Saucfesstreet schools. Your committee recommend that it should he fully explained to the school committee: (1) That the necessity for filling vacancies in higher positions from the staff of ex-pupil-teachcr? cannot be avoided (2) that the Board cannot control such vacancies; (3) that the arrangement made to replace the ex-pupil-teachers removed from the schools is the best which could be made. Your committee recommend that suitable teachers should be selected as soon as possible for the Broadwood and Whakahara aided schools. With reference to clause 2, the Chairman explained that since the Ellerslie Committee had made that recommendation there had been a. fresh committee elected, and the law required that they should be consulted. The report wavS adopted. Technical School: The committee appointed to consider the 73 applications received for the directorship of the Auckland Technical School, reported:—"Your committee report that- they have examined the applications and reserved the names of four candidates for further consideration. Your committee recommend that the final selection be deferred until after a conference with Mr. Mr. Hcgben (Secretary for Education). Your committee recommend that the testimonials of the remaining 69 candidates should be returned to them." The Chairman said Mr. Hog-ben would be in Auckland before next meeting of the Board. The report was adopted, and the question of the appointment was deferred til! next meeting. Grammar School Governors: Mr. L. J. Bagnall was again appointed to represent the Board on the Auckland Grammar School Board of Governors. Pukekohe West: The Pukekohe West Committee wrote suggesting that ' the Board should sell the teacher's residence there and erect a new one. The Board decided that it had not sufficient funds to erect a. new building. Tt was agreed that, the architect should report on the present building.
