STRIKE OF COAL TRIMMERS.
By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright.
, Sydney, April 29. A strike of Newcastle coal-trimmers has occurred owhig to the stevedores refusing to pay for time lost when vessels alongside the wharves are unable to get coal. The grievance has existed for some time. The men allege that they are willing to wait a reasonable time, but are sometimes kept for hours when delay is avoidable.
Negotiations with the stevedores failing the Trimmers' Union decided to strike last night. Th«-4oadi&g of all vessels has ceased, ; and unless a,n early settlement is arrived at it will mean a stoppage of the collieries. (Iteceived April 30. 1.11 a.m.) * Sydney; April 29. The whole of the cranes on the Government wharves at Newcastle were practically idle to-day owing to the trimmers' strike. A little loading where trimming was not required was proceeding at some of the private cranes. The attempt, of the secretary of the Trimmers' Union to induce the men to resume work till Monday pending negotiations for a settlement, failed. A conference of stevedores and the Trimmers Union is being held to-night. It is believed there is a fair hope of arriving at a settlement. Should it fail many collieries will probably be laid idle to-morrow. , '
