It is stated that a majority of the members of the Federal House are in favour of the scheme, for which a canvass has been proceeding for some time, of adding £150 to their salaries. Senators have yet to be canvassed. • PENNY POSTAGE. Sydney, April 28. Mr. Barton says the official estimate of loss by a penny postage throughout Australia * and Australian letters passing outwards, would be £250,000. Such a, loss to the revenue cannot be hastily undertaken. He is afraid universal penny postage will have to wait some time, though no one is more anxious than him for it. . NEW SOUTH WALES WHEAT YIELD. Sydney, April 28. The State's wheat yield last year was 1,692,000 bushels, or an average of 19.40 per acre, the highest record, with one exception, during the past decade. THE PLAGUE.' Sydney, April 28. There have been no plague cases since Friday. Up to date there have been a total of 107 cases, 27 deaths, and 49 discharged. Brisbane, April 28. Three cases of plague have been reported, one fatal. Two previous patients are also dead. A DOMESTIC TRAGEDY. (Received April 29, 12.58 a.m.) Sydney, April 28. ; A tragedy is • reported from Rockdale. Thomas Birch went to tho residence of his brother-in-law, Lawrence,- to see his wife, from whom he was separated. The wife refused his overtures, when he fired a revolver at her. The shot missed her. Lawrence then interfered and Birch shot him dead.
