THE GOLD INCREASE.

While gold-mining does not occupy the dominant place among our industries that it does in some other parts of the world, it is a very important contributor to our colonial income, and sustains a very considerable number of our population. Of the Australasian colonies, only Victoria has exceeded us in total output, as our gold record is rapidly approaching the remarkable sum of sixty millions pounds sterling. The Auckland district ordinarily yields about two-fifths of the yearly New Zealand winning of one and a-half million sterling. During 1900 there was a slight fall in our Auckland gold winning, the colony thus losing over, twenty thousand pounds sterling as compared to 1899. But during the past year there has been noticeable improvement, and the first quarter of the current year shows the very gratifying increase of nearly thirty per cent, over the returns for the same quarter of last year. A very large amount of capital has been expended to bring about this result, and it is greatly to the interest of the industry that the possibility of securing : encouraging returns from perseverance and enterprise should thus be demonstrated.
