DEATH IN THE THAMES POLICE CELLS.
[BT TELEORAni.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Thursday. A man named Patrick Cronin died in the police cells here to-day. Deceased was arrested on a charge of drunkenness at Waikino, on Tuesday last, and as he was in a rather bud state the Paeroa Bench remanded him to Thames for medical treatment. He was consequently brought on to the Thames that afternoon, where lie was examined and prescribed for by Dr. Bond. Yesterday it was thought his condition had improved, but this morning he took a bad turn. Sergeant Clark sent for Dr. Bond, but before the latter arrived Cronin was dead, having expired in the presence of Sergeant Clark and Detective Miller. There is little doubt but that death was due to alcoholic poisoning, but an inquest is to be held to-morrow. Deceased was about 45 years of age, and is believed to be unmarried.
