BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Education Board was held at the Board's offices, Victoria Arcade, yesterday, Mr. L. J. Bagnail, chairman, presiding. There were also present: Messrs. J. D. McKenzie, S. Luke, James Muir, "W. ' Lambe, R. Hobbs, J G. Rutherford, Jos. Blades. A telegram was read from Mr. N. A. MeLeod intimating his inability to attend, and on the motion of Mr. Luke leave of absence was granted.

Chairman's Report: The chairman's report' amoiiff other matters stated that tho Board of Governors, Auckland Grammar School, had been asked to grant the privilege of free tuition to the candidates bracketed fifth and sixth in the list of holders of certificates of proficiency at the junior district scholarships' examination, one of tho first four candidates , having declined the privilege. The resignation of Miss A. E. Brook, Waiwera Springs school, had been received. The report was adopted. Finance Committee: This committee's report contained the following recommendations: —Payment of the following accounts: Board fund, £18 7s 7d; building fund, £432 6s 9d. That steps should bo taken to surrender the Grown grant of lot 37 of section 4, Parish of Waipipi, under the Reserves, etc., Disposal Act, 1901, in exchange for .other land granted and used as a school site. The report was adopted. '■«<; ;■ Selection of Teachers: The report of the Teachers' Selection Committee recommended that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board:— J. W. Rennick to be head teacher of Kirikiri school (March 1); Mr, J. Brook to bo head teacher of Birkdale school: Mr. H. P. Andrew to be head teacher of liowick school; Mr. F. E. Blakey to bo teacher, of Kaitaia school; Mr. ■A. A. Turnor to bo teacher of .- Matahuru schools; Mr. J. S. Doull to bo teacher of Tahekeroa school ; Mr. A. G. Mimics to bo teacher-of Punakitere school; Miss K. Calvert to be teacher of Okoroire school; Miss H. MeGee to be teacher of Wayby school: Miss H. J. Birss to be teacher of Ivomokorau " aided" school; Miss H. M. S. MoGibbon to be mistress of Richmond Road school; Miss A. Penholz, assistant to Newton West school; Miss E. R. Wilson, as substitute assistant to Tauranpea school; Mrs. M. Bruce to bo mistress of Cambridge West school; Miss L. Hamilton, pupil-teacher, from Cambridge West to Huntly school. . That applications for the undernamed appointments should bo invited by advertisement:Remuera (assistant master), salary £195; Newmarket (assistant master), salary £155 ; Weltesloy-sireet (mistress), salary £165; Mount Eden (mistress), salary. £150. That the names and qualifications of the following candidates should be submitted to the School Committee for the position of assistant-master. Mount Albert school: Messrs. R. J. Harris, R. J. Cbrbett, W. A. Toll, Laws, and Tidmarsh. That the names and qualifications of the following candidates should be submitted to the School Committee for the position of assistant-master Coromandel High School: —Messrs. R. I']. .Tamieson, R. J. Corhett, and W. A. Joll. That the names and Qualifications of the following candidates should bo submitted to the District School Committee for the position of assistant-master Cambridge school: —Messrs. R. J. Harris, G. Brown, R. J. Corbett, W. A. •Toll, and A. J. Shepherd. That , the names and qualifications of the following candidates should be submitted to the School Commit-, tee for the position of assistant. Remupra school: —Misses M. Nicholson, M. E. Herbert, E. A. W. Power, and C. E. Gillespie. That - tho employment of two pupil-teachors at the Mangere Bridge school should be continued for the present. That, in view of the difficulty regarding suitable accommodation; the appointments of mistresses to the following schools should be . deferred for the present:—Hukerenui North, Golden Cross, Opitonui. The report was adopted. • ■ Chairman 'Withdraws His Resignation: Before proceeding with the ordinary business the f Chairman made reference to his expression at the previous meeting of his intention to resign his seat on. the :Board. Ho said that since the announcement had appeared he had received a large number of ■ communications and personal interviews asking him to reconsider his decision, and in doforenoo to the wishes expressed it was his intention not' to resign his scat. The announcement was received with general approval;;by the members. Latin and French in High Schools: A report received from the chief inspector (Mr. Petrie) stated that the inspectors had adopted the following resolution relative to the course of instruction in the district high schools: —" While the course of instruction in -the district high schools might include Latin as well as French, we aro of opinion that a teacher qualified to teach French should be included in tho staff of such _ schools, and that preference should he given to this slanguage." It was decided to give effect to the recommendation. Some time sine© the chief inspector urged the Board in arranging the staff of district high schools to make provision for the teaching of French rather than Latin. Pukekohe Master's House: Mr. Win. Lambe reported on tho condition of the schoolmaster's house at Pukekohe West., but action in tho matter was deferred till next meeting, pending receipt of a certain communication from the School Committee. Mr. Lambo was thanked for his report. Appointments of Teachers: Pursuant to notice, Mr. J. D. McKenzie moved the following amended motion relative to the appointments of teachers :—l. That, in order to place the promotion of teachers on a secure and (to some extent) automatic basis, the inspectorial staff, sitting as a Board, bo requested to divide the schools of the Auckland education district into five sections, and to olassify all certificated teachers as eligible for promotion to fill a vacancy in any or every section. , 2. That, in order to promote uniformity in the selection of teachers to fill vacant positions, the names among the applicants appearing first in order of merit upon the list of eligible candidates be forwarded to the School Committee concerned for selection. 3. That the inspectors , meet once a year (at dates to be determined upon) and revise the list, five to form a quorum." After a brief discussion the motion was rejected, Messrs. Muir and McKenzie (mover) being the only supporters.

Now Schools: Applications for new schools were dealt with as under:—Fairburn's: The inspector could not recommend the granting of a second school and the application was declined. Kerikeri: Decided, that an aided schoolshould be established on the usual conditions. Mackaytown: Decided to re-establish tho school in the building to be 'provided by the residents. Oparnu (TCawhia): Decided to es tablish an aided school on the usual conditions. Orewa: Decided to applv for the site and to proceed with the building when funds are available. Pukahu , (B<iy of Plenty): Peferred to the inspector for hi' report. Taotaoroa: For reopening of school : referred to the inspector to report. Upper Waitetuna: For a second school: decided to consult with the committee and 'inspector in the matter. The applications from To Orura and Whonuakite were deferred. Those from Pakarnka (Kaipsi'a) and To Opu (Pahi) were , declined. \ ' : •
