A SUGGESTION.
- TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — view of the present ■ contingency in South Africa might I suggest . that- our Government, instead of restricting the, num. ber of the contingents about to be raised, should ' offer' the Imperial authorities ■■ all who apply that are ' suitable and can pass the necessary tests, , and that; the men . should have the optiont of remaining >. in ? South Africa at the close of the war; if theywish ? The greater number would , not wish to ■ remain -under any consideration, but ft proportion would,-and these would probably; make just the class of settlers the Imperial Government would like to get. It seems to me "a dog in the manger" poKoy; to compel these men to return to this colony, and that then they should have to pay their passages back to South Africa, at a time when every pound would be a consideration to them.
