Cawley's amendment to - the; Address-in-Reply, urging the effective prosecution of the war, and declaring that the Government's attitude does not conduce ,to the rapid termination of; the war, '■■ or to, a " durable peace, was negatived by 333 votes to 123. Mr. Lloyd George said the amendment simply affirmed two contradictory propositions. Apparently a section of his party had captured Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman and steeped him in all the principles of that section. (Received January 24, 1.16 a.m.) '

In the House of Commons Mr. Walton's amendment to the Ad-dress-ih-Reply, that it was essential to safeguard British commercial and political interests in Persia, was withdrawn after Lord Cranbourne had explained the policy to maintain the status quo in Asia, and preserve the: integrity of Persia. : X It was, impossible to abandon British ascendency in the Persian Gulf, and the southern provinces bordering on India.
