A THREATENED SHORTAGE. WATER TO BE TURNED OFF AT NIGHT. At ; last night's meeting of the Auckland City , Council the waterworks engineer - re-' ported that the consumption 'of water during ; the past week had --. been 18,142,000 gallons, and as the yield from all sources during the same period had \ only' been ;■ 16,400,000, the city w»3 going to'■: the bad, at ■ the rate of : a million and three-quarter gallons per week. Every effort I bad been made .to push on the auxiliary supply,' but the' recent wet weather, while :, not materially benefiting the springs, had interfered greatly with the < carting of material, along the track, 'as many as ■ six horses being used to convey lOcwts six miles. Yesterday, however, matters were improved, and should this continue another gang of pipelayers would be started on Monday, and it would still be possible to have the supply available for the end of February or early in March. Three miles of piping had been completed, leaving about four miles and ahalf yet to lay. :;. Meantime, it was . necessary to ; take some steps to reduce the consumption, and ; the ], engineer suggested that the Council should consider whether it would not be preferable to shut tho supply off any part of" the city where the greatest saving could bo effected, from six p.m. to six a.m., rather than discontinue the supply ■to hydraulic lifts, which was a serious inconvenience to .: the Council's best ; customers for water..-'." '-,-•'' , '..'■■-:.'.-:''. The; Mayor moved that the report be received, ana that the waterworks engineer be instructed to give effect to the suggestion ■in tho latter part of his report. - He thought it would bo far better 10 shut off the water from part of the city at night than go on as at present, and probably have to cut off the lifts later on, and throw a number of men out of work. - ;, .. The \ motion was carried . without discussion. _ .■■ In connection with the contemplated permanent water . supply, _ the following report by the Streets Committee was adopted: — Motion as to the extension' of the water supply: The Mayor to report as to the cost of procuring the required data; the work to include an alternative scheme of either duplicating the, present 1 pipes or laying a 24in pipe, diminishing to a pipe. -
