,' THE RIJAPEHU.-A' NEW STEAMER. The New i Zealand Shipping .Company's new i steamer: Ruapehu, - Which • arrived at Wellington from London,* Capetown, and Hobarton Tuesday last; i 3 described as a v very fine Steamer,< somewhat s similar in detailr to _tno company's ; ; steamer.- Bimutaka, but with a considerable i number of improvements. ;; pie steamer was under the flag of the Allan line for some months, being , known as the Australasian,' and made five voyages to and from Liverpool i and Montreal, taking: the place of the s.s. Bavaria, -which was employed in con-, veying troops to South Africa. ,; The Ruapeha's: actual .steaming - time from London, to . Wellington was 42 days 195 hours, which is; a- very , creditable performance. The new steamer is a twin-screw ; vessel '>. of '•■ 7704 tons gross and '4956 ; tons net, and ■; has a large cargo-carrying 'capacity. Her passenger and bedroom accommodation is situated in the company's usual fashion—first ; on the bridge deck, second on the main deck, and the third on the ; same deck aft. •> The first - and second saloons are amidships, the steerage being aft, and away front contact with ; the crew or other. passengers. The first-class bedrooms are composed chiefly .V of two-berth cabins, with ' four' three-berth cabins for those who require them. With the exception of four cabins, they, are all on the outside, and possess a large porthole, some with two, over the settees, but away from the berths. Five cabins, however, have- berths on the outside for those who prefer such. There are four, very large inside cabins, with, splendid separate air trunks, and partitions carried up to the skylights, so that the opening of either may not interfere with any other cabin. '■ The inside cabins have wardrobe?, drawers, and two large mirrors. The outside rooms have a small chest of drawers each, a great boon to passengers, the same number of mirrors, and mostly all a full-length settee, only five of ■ the cabins : having threequarter-length settees.•'.'■'•■■ The second ; cabin bedrooms are nearly all outside, there only being one inside, and are principally of four, berths, but with folding settees, so that should only two persons possess the cabin the other berths make a splendid lounge. There are also twoberth '3 cabins, which are much in demand. These cabins are large and well ventilated in various ways, and are deservedly popular.; The first saloon, for .the number of passengers, is large and spacious, containing two large tables and four, small ones. The music hall is beautifully upholstered and comfortable in every way. The first-class smokeroom is divided into tliree alcoves, making splendid recesses for card parties. The second saloon, on the bridge deck, is large and comfortable, and minus the tables and chairs makes a rare ballroom. The second-class smokeroom is large and exceedingly; snug. The first-class passengers have the privilege of the forward part of the promenade deck, while the second-class passengers have the after end. brat at balls and deck concerts the barriers are thrown aside, making one grand sweep from end to end, with not even a single ventilator in the way. A piano has been placed on deck for deck use only. ■■■ In the steerage there is a large smokeroom, tables, and the dining saloon accommodates 80 at a sitting. : The bedrooms are comprised of two and four-berth cabins, with one and two ports, and three open berth cabins, with several inside two and four-berth cabins, well ventilated, and with either deck lights or electric. . ■ __ ..' ■■"- ___ ■■ ___ ' PORT OF ONEHUNGA.
