ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. [by TELEGRAPH. —own CORRESPONDENT J. Wellington, Thursday. Asbury, a well-known Association football - player and coach in" England, arrived here yesterday with the object of settling pcnnan- • ently in the colony should business conditions ~ r " prove favourable, and acting as coach. As- •, bury, who was at otic time manager of the ; Vulcan Engineering Works, at Birmingham/ is a keen sportsman' and a good all-round athlete. He had been connected with the - principal Association teams in England for the past eight years, having played for Astonvilla, the premier team of England. 1 He was reserved for the first eleven of this club for three years, and was captain of the second . for four years. He also, played 'for Small- ' heath,, which is still in the first league of England. Asb.ury holds 38 football medals, and has coaehqcV,four teams'with great success. He represented "Warwick in several , i important county matches. He also has 14-0 prizes for ; running' and other : athletio - i sports. •" . ■ 1 ' TMr. A. E. Gibbs, ; manager of the Colonial Mutual Life Insurance Company, who is a , strong, supporter of Association football, returned yesterday to the colony in company with Asbury. Mi Gibbs speaks enthusiastically of the support given to Association football . at Home, and says that at the final match for the Glasgow Cup between the Rangers and,; the Celtio ■ teams, at the Rangers' ground in ! Glasgow, there were 40,000 spectators, h The ground has seating accommodation for 70,G00. §J The English Association decided that it could » not do anything towards sending a team out' to New Zealand, or towards assisting in the ir/itter_ of :coaches! Mr. Gibbs met with, opposition in these matters, chiefly from the ■ : i representatives of the. professional 'teams, who - hold that the money made by -the clubs and players of England should be spent on them and not outside. . Nevertheless Mr. Gibb-i made preliminary arrangements with a gentleman who will bring out a team the season after next (1903) if the necessary financial guarantees are forthcoming.' ■ 2* • Asbury states that a good Association football team from New Zealand touring England would make a handsome profit after paving all expenses. 1
